Our Story
About
In 2004 our humble NPO was started at the home and in the garage of our Founder & Director, Judy Strickland. She saw a need in the community for Mental Health assistance to those who aren’t able to afford it. Soon, the word spread and her donation based counselling grew. Today we have 4 Centres serving the Cape Town community and all the Centres stay open, thanks to funding and donations provided.
Mission
South Africa is a culturally rich and diverse country. Hope House recognises that diversity and even more, we recognise the similarities we share. We share human experiences. The world has come a long way from seeing Mental Health as a “myth” or an excuse to now where it has started to transform into a basic human right and necessity. At Hope House, we are dedicated to lifting the stigmatised vail placed over Mental Health care and Counselling. There is a reason why we are still here, why we are still standing and why we still serve the community, because we stand for growth and positive change. Elements which each and every individual innately seeks and strives for.
Vision
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”
We want to empower not only individuals, but generations for the future to come. Our mere existence as a NPO stands for inspiration to our communities and for them to realise that they are important and that they play a vital role in our society’s development. We understand that all aren’t as open to counselling as others, that is why we run intervention programmes, provide training and workshops, to make sure we cater for the majority of our community. We envision a community that doesn’t shy away from life’s obstacles and difficulties but rather feels emotionally and mentally equipped to face these challenges and support one another on our journeys. We hope to serve as a guiding beacon, to providing a sense of purpose & motivation to those in need.To read our latest newsletter, please click here.
